The land between the corporate offices of Colmore Row and the stygian boundary of the inner ring road is developing rapidly. Victorian buildings are mutating into financial consultancies, design houses and fashionable cafe bars. But modern cities whisper of their past. Here on Cornwall Street, in a vacant lot created by the demolition of some forgotten rooms, we can clearly make out the exposed fossilised form of a staircase, imprinted on the the surviving wall. And instantly, we are transported back to a time when dour clerks would trudge these floors, weighed down by dusty leather-bound tomes, and ink out their mediocre days.
