Very much in the optimistic spirit of so many of Euphoria's public works, we find Swing 1988 by Kevin Atherton. Erected as part of the St Chad's Circus complex, this arresting sculpture was unveiled by Councillor Renee Spector in March 1990, and so predates Gormley's more controversial, and therefore better known, "Iron Man". The sculpture represents a freeze-frame image of a swing in motion, paradoxically frozen by its physical construction, not unlike its setting. Its plaque includes the optimistic warning: Danger: please do not climb on this sculpture - a daring bid to incite adverse publicity for the artwork and its environment, which tragically failed to materialise.
