In the Euphoria league of shopping malls, the Pallasades is in mid-table obscurity. But it does boast one of the city centre's most underrated landmarks: its remarkable 2-stage external escalator. So elongated is this structure, that it is impossible to see the top as you stand, cold-palmed and expectant, at the bottom. Our photographer attempted to capture this phenomenon, but the strategically placed security guard informed us that photography was forbidden without the prior permission of the centre manager. Our conspiracy theorists were immediately alerted by this clear attempt to augment the mystique surrounding what must surely be one of the Seven Wonders of the Midlands. Anxious not to disappoint, however, we were able to photograph the centre's extraordinary facade, standing bravely only yards from the threshold of the escalator's imposing atrium. |
